Custom EDGAR
Recognos Financial is a distributor of the SEC’s EDGAR database. As a distributor Recognos Financial has access to the millions of documents contained in EDGAR. These documents are in text format and in order to get to the specific information in which a user has an interest, the document must be manually read. Now Recognos Financial has the ability to structure these documents and extract the particular data in which a user is interested.
There are two levels of interactivity that are provided: the first is a simple indexing that allows the user to go directly to a section of a document based on the table of contents for that document type. The second is the ability to identify specific data elements within each document section, highlight them within the text, and extract them to a database, or specific file format of the user’s choice. In addition, Recognos Financial can provide all documents of a particular type for all filers or a specified subset based on a user’s preferences. In example, a user may request all Form 4’s for a particular portfolio of assets with the name, trade date, type of trade, price, etc. This data can be provided with the original document filed with EDGAR that is fully indexed to display the selected data points.Historical trades for the specific individual (or group of individuals, i.e. board members) can be supplied along with additional pertinent information such as 10Ks and Qs, latest news, price history for the traded instrument or other information requested by the user. The results can be displayed in a custom user interface or delivered as a data file in either a standard format or a particular format requested by the user.
The following diagram demonstrates this capability for a mutual fund prospectus or N1-A or 485POS. The left side of the screen displays a list of user requested data elements (taxonomy) The right side displays the original document filed with EDGAR with the selected data element highlighted. Not only does this method produce a file of structured data for the user, but it also provides immediate verification of that data as reported by the source to the SEC. There is no keying of data therefore the integrity of the data is maintained.
